The Phoenix Suns began as an NBA expansion team in 1968. The Suns’ first seasons were moderately successful, thanks to the talents of Dick Van Arsdale and Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins. In 1976, the Suns went on a surprising post-season run in which the “Sunderalla” Suns pulled off upsets in the first 2 rounds to reach the NBA Finals, but ultimately fell to the Boston Celtics in 6 games.
The Phoenix Suns acquired point guard Kevin Johnson in the middle of the 1987–1988 season and signed forward Tom Chambers in the off-season. The duo would form the core of a reinvigorated team that advanced to the Conference Finals in 1989 and 1990. In 1992, Phoenix acquired all-star Charles Barkley who led the team to the 1993 NBA Finals. However, they lost to the Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns Ticket Holders wouldn’t see their team advance to the finals again.
The Suns started rebuilding in the early 2000s, drafting high school phenomenon Amar’e Stoudemire in 2002 and reacquiring point guard Steve Nash in 2004. Phoenix Suns Ticket Holders enjoyed an era of exciting, high-scoring play thanks to Nash’s up-tempo playing style. Shaquille O’Neal joined the Phoenix Suns in the 2007–2008 season to help bolster the team’s defense. However, the “Shaq Attack” wasn’t enough to get the team past the first round of playoffs and O’Neal left in 2009.
Nash and Stoudemire helped the Suns make an impressive run in the 2009–2010 season, but were beaten by the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. Stoudemire joined the New York Knicks in the following off-season, and the Suns entered a period of non-winning seasons that continued throughout the 2010s.
Phoenix fans can get tickets to all Suns’ home games played at Talking Stick Resort Arena from Golden Tickets.
